Contributing to Don't Follow the Wind, Artist Taryn Simon is developing a database of the last digital photographs captured by Fukushima residents in the days and hours before the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, and the resulting nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station. Entitled Final Photos, the database is accessible online yet the information on the pages is being transmitted from a small server powered by solar panels located inside the inaccessible Fukushima exclusion zone. The communication signals within the irradiated zone are intermittent and unstable, resulting in a precarious space of connection. Final Photos brings the images back to reside in the area where they were taken, while the inhabitants wait to return.
